1981 Lloyd Thompson Founded

Lloyd Thompson was founded in 1981 as a wholesale marine and energy broker. It was wholly owned by Lloyd Thompson Group plc and operated as its main subsidiary. Lloyd Thompson Group plc obtained a full listing on the London Stock Exchange in October 1987.

From its origins as a wholesale marine and energy broker, Lloyd Thompson expanded operations into further areas of expertise through the recruitment of key individuals and leaders who helped to develop Lloyd Thompson’s diversified capabilities in the areas of marine, non-marine, and reinsurance during the 1980's.

In 1994 Lloyd Thompson established a position in the important and growing Bermuda market with the acquisition of Triangle Holdings Ltd. All of these specialties were grouped into two distinct business areas that we referred to as International Insurance and International Reinsurance.

Throughout its history, Lloyd Thompson has maintained a policy of expanding into selected areas of business only where it believed it could rapidly establish a prominent market position. Great care was taken to ensure that in every new area of operation a complete range of skills were put into place to provide a total service to clients.
